It incorporates a flexible hinge that allows you to adjust the display between three key positions rather than completely removing the keyboard. Although this style has been seen before, Microsoft’s introduction of it here serves as a clear statement of intent.

The review of Microsoft Surface Laptop. However, does it go far enough to persuade creative professionals to forgo an iPad Pro or Mac? Or even entice customers? To find out, I tested the Surface Laptop Studio for a few weeks.

Design & Build

• The new 3-in-1 design works well but has its limitations

Microsoft’s premium hybrid Surface Laptop 5, the Surface Laptop Studio, takes the place of the Surface Book while adopting a very different form factor. The screen on the Laptop Studio can be moved forward in front of the keyboard or laid flat on top of it in place of a laptop with a fully detachable display.

Although you lose the flexibility of utilizing the screen as a single tablet, this officially makes it a 3-in-1 device. However, unlike convertible computers with 360° hinges, you are constrained to these three fixed settings. With the display pulled forward in Stage mode, which isn’t the most comfortable angle for watching films, I found this to be very annoying – but there’s no way to change it.

Yet that was the only actual circumstance in which I actually felt the design was constrained. The laptop mode of the gadget is superb, and the studio mode is ideal for taking handwritten notes with the brand-new Slim Pen 2 stylus. Presentations are not part of my regular process, but I suppose Stage mode would be much more useful in this situation.

But if the device were closed, you might not be aware that this feature was available. The exclusive Platinum coating is the only choice, and the superior aluminum alloy construction is something we’ve seen on Surface devices countless times before. Although I would have preferred to see some additional color options, hardware created for commercial use typically has a simple appearance.

The other is a substantial base that protrudes from the device’s bottom and gives it an interesting dual-level design. It appears that this is done to increase stability, which is excellent, but also makes the device bulky at 17.88mm thick.

Yet with substantial speaker grilles on the left and right side, Microsoft has made effective use of the area around the base. Also, the front of the device has powerful magnets that are intended to serve as a safe place to store the Slim Pen 2 pen. When not in use, it remains out of the way while yet being conveniently available because it also functions as a charging station.

Keyboard & Trackpad

• Decent keyboard, but could do with more travel
• The impressive trackpad, but Slim Pen 2 is sold separately
• No fingerprint sensor

Although Microsoft decided without incorporating a separate number pad, the Surface Laptop Studio boasts a sizable, full-size keyboard. I like this design more because it is more functional and appealing.

Even though each key delivers a respectable amount of travel, I had expected more from a gadget this compact. Although it won’t compete with mechanical keyboards or even Dell’s XPS line, most users will find the typing experience to be satisfactory. The illumination may be adjusted in three different ways, and the F keys also serve as shortcuts for numerous basic operations.

Certainly, the Surface Laptop Studio has enough space for a sizable trackpad. Although its haptic feedback requires some getting accustomed to, it offers a more convincing navigating experience than the majority of competitors. Of course, there are several possibilities, such as input through touch, a mouse, or a pen.

The latter requires an additional stylus, such as the Slim Pen 2, which is worth mentioning here. It has a flatter shape than previous Microsoft styluses, as I observed in my review of the Surface Pro 8, but it seems more natural when making handwritten notes or sketches.

It has a 2ms latency and can detect 4096 different degrees of pressure sensitivity, simulating the feel of a pen on paper. The cherry on top is the ability to magnetically attach and charge underneath the trackpad. Just a shame it’s not part of the purchase.

Screen & Speakers

• Great 120Hz LCD display
• Adaptive refresh rate feature on the way
• Quad speakers are solid but unspectacular

Microsoft chose a screen size for the Laptop Studio that hasn’t been used on a Surface tablet before: 14.4in. It’s an LCD display that the business calls “PixelSense Flow,” as opposed to an OLED display. For Microsoft’s most expensive laptop, I was expecting the latter, but it’s not a big deal.

The screen’s resolution is 2400 by 1600, which means it uses the now-standard 3:2 aspect ratio. Excellent levels of detail are present, and the colors are bold and vibrant. The majority of individuals won’t need a display of higher quality; only a small minority will.

The numbers support that, with my tests showing 100% sRGB coverage, 83% Adobe RGB coverage, and 87% DCI-P3 coverage. Although outdoor use is still difficult most of the time, I also recorded an excellent maximum brightness of 532 nits.

Microsoft is developing a feature called Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) for Windows 11 that will enable the refresh rate to change dynamically based on the circumstances. However as of this writing, that isn’t an option, so you’ll have to pick between 60Hz and 120Hz.

There are also four speakers in total, which are output through sizable grilles on the left and right underside. Although the audio is bright and crisp, I had hoped for more bass and an immersive experience. The fact that the music here hardly ever becomes distorted, even at high volumes, is a benefit.

Specs & Performance

Microsoft’s most potent laptop to date, the Surface Laptop Studio, has the internals to match. The Intel Core i5-11300H processor and Iris Xe integrated graphics are included in entry-level setups, but you may spend more money to get the Core i7-11370H processor and an RTX 3050 Ti GPU. Even if the discrete graphics card is one of Nvidia’s more affordable choices, it’s uncommon to find a Microsoft laptop with one. Performance is good all around, and the model I tested has a generous 32GB of Memory. Nothing in my regular routine, which entails multitasking, email, Adobe Photoshop, and web browsing, slowed down or stumbled.

Microsoft offers plenty of storage options, which is in part due to the absence of expandable storage. The cheapest model comes with a 256GB SSD, but this can be upgraded to a 2TB SSD.

Software

• Windows 11 Pro out of the box
• A handful of extra security/management features
• Performs almost identically to Windows 11 Home

The Surface Laptop Studio, in contrast to other laptops from Microsoft, comes pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro because it’s primarily intended for creative professionals and executives using it for business purposes. Compared to Windows 11 Home, there are a few more security and administration capabilities, but these aren’t actually useful to users. The majority of individuals won’t distinguish between the two.

But, Windows 11 as a whole differs significantly from Windows 10 – especially graphically. Although it is possible to revert to Windows 10, I wouldn’t advise doing so after purchasing the Surface Laptop Studio. These include those that it left out when the new OS was unveiled, but Windows 10 is not anticipated to gain any additional noteworthy features. As we move forward, Windows 11 feels like the best option.
